Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - The African Union (AU) Commission on Saturday called for the inclusion of women in security and peace making efforts in Africa.
The call was made at the conclusion of a three day pre-AU summit held in Addis Ababa to discuss the issues related with Information Communication Technology(ICT)-gender and women role in peace in the continent.
Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS), Bineta DIOP said that the pre summit discussed in detail how women in African can play a meaningful role in peace making efforts, which is among the challenges facing the continent. Former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former Irish president, Mary Robinson, said that prime attention should be given to African women with a view to enabling them play a significant role in peace and security issues. She called for utmost efforts to be exerted to enable women actively participate in peace and security affairs in Africa. "Working together with women living in areas such as Darfur is significant to further strengthen the struggle towards ensuring peace and security," said Robinson. Many regional bodies working on gender affairs and civil society organizations of Africa attended the pre- AU summit on gender and ICT. Issues raised during the discussions are expected to be given due attention during the assembly of African heads of state and government. The pre- summit also proposed policy briefing that will be presented to the AU summit to give due attention to enable women to benefit in ICT and related issues. -APA |
