Douala, Cameroon - Cameroonian jazz bass player and musician Richard Bona will give a series of concerts in Cameroon as from next week in a bid to raise funds that will build a paediatric ward in Douala for the benefit of under-privileged groups.

The mega star will be accompanied by other famous artists like Grace Decca.

This fundraising should immediately allow the beginning of building works valued at CFA 220 million.

The management of the ward will be entrusted to the missionaries of the Protestant Church. It will also house a residence for the nurses. The project is also supported by members of the Lions Club Douala Orchidee.

"Officials of the hospital approached us. After a careful study of the project, we realized its usefulness, and immediately began raising funds in preparation for the work to start later this month," the initiators explained.

According to them, it was unbearable to see "mothers sleeping under the beds or spend all night standing near their hospitalized babies. This made other women sick and could no longer properly care for their babies."

The participation in this humanitarian work of US-based Richard Bona comes less than two weeks after the visit of former tennis champion-turned musician, French-Cameroonian Yannick Noah.

During his stay in Cameroon, Noah held concerts whose profits help build an arts museum in the Sultanate of Foumban in western Cameroon.
