Maputo, Mozambique - The troika of the fourteen-member Southern African Development Community, SADC will on Thursday in Maputo, Mozambique meet with Zimbabwe’s feuding political leaders as part of a final bid to try and defuse the crisis threatening the unity government in that country.
A SADC press statement availed to APA on Tuesday says the SADC chairperson (Democratic Republic of Congo) Joseph Kabila and the outgoing chairperson SADC (South Africa) Jacob ZUma will attend the Troika Summit. “The Summit will review the political situation in the region, particularly in Lesotho, Madagascar and Zimbabwe,” a brief statement read. Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, Swazi King Mswati and Zambian President Rupiah Banda will meet with Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, Premier Morgan Tsvangirai, and deputy PM Arthur Mutambara to tackle the current standoff which was triggered when the MDC disengaged from ZANU PF more than two weeks ago. The long-time Mugabe arch-rival and political opponent Tsvangirai and his MDC, withdrew from the government after accusing ZANU PF of being an unreliable and dishonest coalition partner before boycotting cabinet meetings. He charged that Mugabe is refusing to honour the undertakings in the unity agreement between the three parties, on democratic reforms. The SADC troika of the Organ on peace, defence and security cooperation comprises Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland. -APA |
